Man shot, killed after allegedly trying to break into home

WILSON, N.C. (WNCT) – A 71-year-old Wilson County man is safe and a home invasion suspect is dead.

Paul Morgan was in bed early Monday morning when he heard someone knocking on his front door. He told his wife to call 911 and he went toward the door.

That’s when he fired two warning shots to try and scare away the would-be intruder. Instead, police say Morgan killed him.

Morgan says he has no idea why someone wanted to break into his home or what they were after.

“Anybody that time of night would come and try to break in your house, you know, they probably have a gun too and they try to kill you or something. So I did what I had to do,” explained Paul Morgan, homeowner.

Police haven’t identified the would-be intruder and are still investigating.

The Wilson Police Department is encouraging anyone with information regarding this case to contact the Wilson Police Department at 252-399-2323 or Crime Stoppers at 252-243-2255.
