JACKSONVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) – One of the brothers found murdered in Onslow County last week died from a gunshot wound to the head.
That’s new information from the Medical Examiner’s Office for the cause of death for Tyler Gilbert. He’s the 16-year-old high school student found dead near his 19-year-old brother Deandre.
Deandre’s autopsy results are pending.
Their family reported the two missing on Sunday, May 15th, days before detectives found their bodies in the woods in Maple Hill. Deandre’s birthday was a few days before he went missing.
Investigators aren’t saying much about the person of interest they have in custody.
Sheriff Hans Miller and Chief Investigator Major Chris Thomas gave brief interviews to the media Thursday afternoon in the homicide investigation. That’s when they first named Steven McCarty as a person of interest in the case of the deaths of the two brothers and asked him to come forward.
Sheriff Miller said it’s believed that the deaths of the Gilbert brothers is drug or gang-related. Tyler had a minor trespassing charge; Deandre also had a previous record.
Deputies found McCarty over the weekend at his friend’s home on Burgaw Highway. He’s booked for a probation violation and is not charged in connection with the deaths.
The 23-year-old remains at the Onslow County Detention Center without bond.
