PIRATE PROFILE: ECU’s Avion Jones jumping to new heights

GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) – On Saturday, East Carolina high jumper Avion Jones jumped 7 feet, 7 inches to claim gold at the American Athletic Conference Championships.

He currently is the best high jumper in the college athletics and his 7-7 mark is the second best of any man in the world in 2016.

Jones now has his sights set on the 2016 Summer Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

The 2016 U.S. Olympic Team Trials are set for early July in Oregon.

But before Avion can compete there, Jones will look for momentum at the NCAA Regionals next week in Jacksonville, Florida.

WNCT’s Patrick Quinn went one-on-one with Jones and found that the 7-7 jump is simply raising the bar for Avion.
