Health initiative making its way through General Assembly

GREENVILLE, NC (WNCT) – Making sure your family has a good meal for dinner no matter where you live is part of what one Pitt County representative signed on to.

He hopes state senators will push forward the plan before the short session ends.

Nested in the house budget is a way to provide $6,000 grants to install refrigerators in convenience stores. The goal is to have fresh fruits and vegetables available to people who don’t have access to grocery stores.

There’s been some debate about how effective the measure could be.

Representative Greg Murphy said anything to keep our state healthy is worth the money, “What we’re trying to do is invest now so we don’t have so much cost later.”

The state senate could have their version of the budget done by Memorial Day.
