New wave of “informal” churches hitting the East

GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) – Decades ago, church used to be a very formal and structured environment. But now, “come as you are” churches are beginning to pop up everywhere you look.

In the Greenville area alone, there are at least five churches they offer informal settings to worship.

Ignite Church started in 2010, and since then has averaged several hundred people at each service.

Lead pastor Jason Lineberger said the informal setting allows them to put all of the focus and energy on what is really important.

“It’s very refreshing to say hey I can come just as I am. I can come and the focus isn’t going to be on what I look like, or what I sound like, or what I drive, or other things, it’s going to be on me experiencing god,” he said.

Lineberger added that they started Ignite mainly for college students, but over the years, have branched out to include everyone.

Ignite meets every Sunday at 9:15 a.m. and 11 a.m. in the Greenville Convention Center.
