School bus drivers take their skills to NC competition

RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCT) – School bus drivers from across North Carolina took their driving skills to Raleigh to compete.

The Buckle Up! School Bus Driver ROADeo Competition took place at the state fairgrounds on Thursday.

Drivers from Beaufort, Craven, Lenoir, Onslow and Pitt counties were just some of the finalists that qualified for the competition.

The event also draws attention to safety. It’s something drivers like Carlton Roberson take very seriously.

Roberson has been with the Beaufort County School District for a decade. The Chocowinity Middle School head custodian and driver took home the district title in April.

“You know, some people don’t pay attention to the stop arm and stuff like that so you still have to pay attention,” said Roberson.

The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction said drivers from Avery, Wake and Hertford counties took home the first, second and third place title respectively.
