GOLDSBORO, N.C. (WNCT)- The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office has received several reports of residents being contacted by someone who claims to work for the IRS.
Victims say the caller claims that he or she owes back taxes and if it’s not paid immediately, they will be arrested or possibly sued.
The caller tries to persuade the victim to either charge the money to a debit or credit card, or to wire the money to a certain address. There are multiple versions of the scam.
Wayne County officials warn residents to never give out any type of financial information to any unknown person over the phone. If someone owes the IRS or the Department of Revenue, they would contact you first by mail, or in person. They wouldn’t be arresting for debt owed.
The IRS would charge someone, only if they broke the law.
Residents are still being contacted about a large amount of money they’ve won, or a car. However, in order to “claim a prize,” taxes or, a service charge, must be paid before receiving the prize.
