LAWRENCEBURG, Tenn. (WKRN) – A heroic high school student is being recognized by a local police department for saving a man after his car burst into flames.

Hallie Shipp, 16, says she and her friend, 19, were driving on Weakley Creek Road on March 28 and saw a car upside down in a ditch and flames shooting from the front of it.

The teens stopped and called 911 before quickly realizing the force of the crash left the driver trapped inside of the car.

As the flames continued to grow around the driver, the teens pulled the man out of the car through the back window.

“I was scared. I just wanted to help him. I didn’t know what was going to happen. I didn’t know if I was going to die. We were just trying to pull him out and we did,” Shipp recalled.

By the time emergency personnel arrived, the car was engulfed in flames. Officers said the only way anyone could have survived is if they were ejected.

Police began looking in ditches hoping to find someone.

“We said we had the driver and they were amazed that two girls could have pulled the driver out of the car,” Shipp told News 2.

The driver, Bobby Dewayne Stevenson, 27, suffered broken bones and a few scratches and was transported to the hospital.

Shipp, a sophomore at Lawrence County High School, was recently recognized by the Lawrenceburg Police Department and reunited with the man she saved.

“We hugged and he said thank you,” said Shipp. “It was an emotional day.”

Stevenson’s dad says the girls were his son’s guardian angels.
