NEW BERN, N.C. (WNCT) – The teen driver of an SUV is now charged after a collision with a log truck on Tuesday.
State Highway Patrol said 17-year-old Shaundre C. Mims of Vanceboro was charged with driving left of center after being released from Carolina East Medical Center, where he was treated for minor injuries.
Troopers said Mims was traveling south on NC 43 in a 2001 Lexus SUV when he crossed the center line and struck a 1995 Freightliner log truck head on. The driver of that log truck, 40-year-old J Guadalupe Urietacampos of Goldsboro ran off the right side of the road after impact, at which time the log truck caught fire. Mims’ SUV traveled back across the southbound lane of NC43 after impact, ran off the right shoulder and came to rest against the guardrail facing north. Fortunately, the driver of the log truck was able to get out of the truck and wasn’t injured.
