Tourism impacting Greenville’s economy

GREENVILLE, NC (WNCT) – Community members celebrated the future growth of Greenville at the National Travel and Tourism Week luncheon on Tuesday.

They discussed the importance of travel in North Carolina, and how to increase tourism in the East.

Andrew Schmidt, Executive Director of Greenville-Pitt County Convention and Visitors Bureau, said tourism should continue to be a big part of Greenville’s economy, “We have a wonderful new $4.2 million dollar expansion for our Convention Center; that makes a difference,” said Schmidt. “We’re really invested in sports tourism, which we haven’t done before.”

Last year, tourists spent $213 million dollars in Greenville and Pitt County. The Visitors Bureau estimates 2,000 people in Pitt County have jobs because of the industry.
