Pirate football gets set for first true scrimmage of Spring

GREENVILLE, N.C. – East Carolina resumed its spring practice schedule with a high intensity workout in pads Wednesday afternoon on Hight Field inside the Cliff Moore Practice Complex. The two-hour outing also completed preparation efforts for the Pirates’ first full-length intra-squad scrimmage scheduled for Saturday night at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium.

Head coach Scottie Montgomery indicated that Saturday’s scrimmage would be scripted for approximately 90 to 100 plays and all levels of the Pirates’ current personnel are expected to experience action for evaluation and game-tape purposes. ECU’s previous two live contests, conducted on March 23 and April 2, featured only 50 snaps each.

“There was a lot of energy out there today,” Montgomery said. “The number of errors continue to decrease and I credit that to our attention to detail. We put in some different packages and everyone seemed to respond and pick things up well. It’s coming along nicely, but I’m looking forward to seeing the bigger picture on Saturday. We need to stay committed to fundamental football and come out of it healthy.”

Montgomery, defensive coordinator Kenwick Thompson and offensive coordinator Tony Petersen addressed the tempo on both sides of the ball Wednesday, accelerating the action during 31-minute team-on-team segments that included continued emphasis on redzone conversations and stops. The Pirates also devoted 10 minutes to third down efficiency before following with another spirited three-on-three drill to promote an increased level of physicality.

After Saturday’s closed scrimmage, which will serve as East Carolina’s 11th practice of the spring, the Pirates will have just three more weekday afternoon sessions remaining before completing its workout schedule with the playing of the Purple-Gold Game April 16.

Junior OLB Pat Green missed his fourth-straight practice, currently adhering to concussion protocol before being cleared for a return to action … Redshirt freshman WR Deondre Farrier also remains sidelined for a similar condition … Junior Randall Anderson, who opened his career as a defensive lineman before being moved to outside linebacker prior to the 2015 campaign, is back at his familiar end position this spring … On the flipside, junior Kiante Anderson (who transferred into the ECU program as a DL from St. Augustine’s in January, 2015), is now getting reps at the “rush” outside linebacking position in Thompson’s defensive alignment … ECU’s offense enjoyed success during the team’s redzone snaps on Wednesday, accounting for five scores … QB Philip Nelson tossed TD throws to Quay Johnson, Jimmy Williams and Trevon Brown, while fellow signal-caller Kurt Benkert connected with Terrell Green and Devin Anderson on scoring passes …Montgomery announced Wednesday that senior ILB Darius Wright has been dismissed from the program for a violation of team rules … Wright tallied 10 tackles (three solo) in 11 games off the bench last fall after transferring from Hutchinson CC.

Next Workout: Saturday, April 9 (6:00-8:00 p.m.)

Remaining Workouts: April 11, April 13, April 15 and April 16 (Purple-Gold Game, 2:00 p.m.)
