Kinston woman dies after gun is accidentally shot, suspect charged

KINSTON, N.C. (WNCT)- 17-year-old Blake Kyndall Turner was shot and killed after a gun accidentally was discharged on March 31.

Austin Ray Newcome, 18, was arrested and charged with Involuntary Manslaughter and Possession of a Stolen Firearm. He’s since been confined in the W.E. Smith Detention Center.

Lenoir County officials responded to a shooting incident at 3901 Mimosa Lane in LaGrange. When they arrived, deputies found a Turner, who was shot with serious injuries.

After thorough investigation, evidence showed that Newcome was handling the gun when it accidentally discharged, causing Turner to be struck.

The investigation is ongoing with the follow-up of the stolen firearm and the pending autopsy with the NC Medical Examiners Office.
