Students stage protest as Spellings brings “Listening Tour” to ECU

GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) – Dozens of students at ECU are still not happy with the UNC system’s choice for its new president.

Their protest comes as Margaret Spellings visits Greenville as part of her “Listening Tour” across all 17 UNC system schools. The focus of spellings’ visit to ECU will be health care access and student success.

Spellings has been a controversial pick as the new president from the very beginning, as she was the U.S. Secretary of Education” under George W. Bush and led the implementation of the No Child Left Behind Act.

Protestors at ECU demand Spellings work against the North Carolina Gap legislation and improve the quality of education for students of color and the LGBT community.

There will be more about the protests on WNCT 9 On Your Side at 5 & 6.
