CHOWAN COUNTY, N.C. (WAVY) — An inmate at the Chowan County Detention Facility escaped Sunday evening, according to the Chowan County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities say 26-year-old Kelvin Singleton used a weapon-like tool from his toothbrush and forced an officer to release him around 4 p.m. Sunday. The officer was unharmed.

Singleton was last seen near the jail at the intersection of of Gale and Oakum Streets. He was originally incarcerated in January on robbery and second-degree kidnapping charges.

Authorities say Singleton is also facing assault and other charges in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Chowan County Sheriff Dwayne L. Goodwin says anyone who may encounter Singleton should use caution and discreetly alert authorities. Singleton has a tattoo of a cross between his eyebrows.

K-9 units have been dispatched and are continuing to look for Singleton.

10 On Your Side’s Chris Horne is heading to Edenton, and will be providing updates on the search for Singleton on WAVY News 10 starting at 4 p.m.
