Victim identified in Beaufort County fatal crash

WASHINGTON, N.C. (WNCT) – One person is dead after a two-car accident on U.S. 264 near N.C. 92 in Beaufort County.

1st Sergeant David Clifton told 9 On Your Side, Richard Shavender Jr. of Washington died in the accident. It happened around 5 p.m. Saturday.

Clifton said Shavender was driving a Corvette when he made a right turn off of Camp Leach Road onto US 264 east.

A witness said Shavender accelerated his car while trying to shift gears which led to him losing control of his car and crossing the center line. That’s when he collided head-on with a Cadillac Escalade. Delray Quinvy-Alexander Jennette was driving the Escalade.

Sahvender Jr. passed away. Jennette was airlifted to Vidant Medical Center with nonlife-threatening injuries.

Clifton said alcohol was not a factor, but unsafe movement and left of center were contributing factors.

No charges will be filed.

The Beaufort Co. Sheriff’s Office, Bunyan Fire and EMS assisted the State Highway Patrol in directing traffic and securing the scene.
