ATLANTIC BEACH, N.C. (WNCT) – Many in the east are taking advantage of the early holiday and warm weather.
Some are traveling to their spring break destination while others are enjoying the North Carolina coast.
And dozens are heading to Atlantic Beach this weekend. Some see it as an easy getaway for Easter weekend, while others see the first spike in business for the year.
“We just opened three days ago it’s been slammed just because of the weather,” said Jessica Gardener, Manager at Idle Hour Biergarten in Atlantic Beach.
With Easter as the unofficial kick off to beach weekends, businesses in Atlantic Beach are enjoying the surge.
Gardener said this time last year Idle Hour was nowhere near as busy as it was on Friday. She said because of the influx of people coming to Atlantic Beach, she’s had to call in kitchen staff to help serve customers.
“He’s been serving tables and it’s his first time so it’s been quite interesting and Mikey, he’s really my bar back so they’re both not used to the computer system at all,” said Gardener.
Even though it’s still March, people were out and about on what looked and felt like a typical summer day.
The weekend also marks the kick off of spring break for many students across North Carolina.
“Actually enjoying our first official day of spring break so I brought them to enjoy the weather and the beach,” said Odessa Dwyer, who took her family to the beach.
“This is the time of the year when the kids are off from school and they want to get out and the weather’s nice so we want to get outside and enjoy it,” said Christy MacLaird who spent the day at Atlantic Beach with her kids.
Some other folks simply thought it was too gorgeous of a day to pass up.
“We just woke up, thought it looked pretty out and came to the beach,” said Julie Hillis who came from Princeton, N.C. for a weekend trip.
Business owners said they expect to stay busy throughout the weekend.
