SMITHFIELD, N.C. (WNCN) — Johnston County leaders on Wednesday night adopted a resolution supporting bringing a CSX rail terminal to the county.
The resolution by the Johnston County Board of Commissioners did not specify a location for the CSX Intermodal Terminal, said Commissioner Chad Stewart.
CSX originally wanted to build the massive project in Selma, but property owners voiced concerns about losing land.
The resolution Wednesday was approved, even though the board has not yet identified a location for the terminal, Stewart said.
Stewart said that the group adopted the resolution because there had never been one before – only a statement supporting the concept.
Stewart says circumstances changed since the adoption of that statement.
The board has support from the Chamber Of Commerce and a number of businesses that showed commissioners how important the hub would be for Johnston County and the state, according to Stewart.
Commissioners realized the importance of the need for the project, Stewart added.
