Arrest made following October fatal crash in Wilson Co.

WILSON, N.C. (WNCT)- Taner Poythress, 20, and Heather Lewis, 18, were killed in a crash on October 16, 2015 on I-95 in Wilson County.

Five months later, the Alcohol Law Enforcement Branch made an arrest Wednesday following an investigation into underage drinking involved in that accident.

Conner Garrett Shackleford, 21, was charged with two counts of giving alcohol to an underage person and two counts of aiding and abetting in the possession and consumption of alcohol to someone less-than-21 by providing them alcoholic beverages.

According to the press release, a concerned family member of one of the victims contacted the ALE. Following that, a source investigation commenced.

Agents were able to figure out that the Wilson-native purchased alcohol and provided it to Poythress and Lews. Later that evening in October, Lewis hit a tree off of I-95.

“Underage drinking and driving cases often result in tragedy.  We take these cases seriously and we will track down every lead to determine who is providing alcoholic beverages to our youths,” said Eric Swain, ALE Special Agent in Charge. ”

Some people think they can give alcoholic beverages to teens and control the situation, but far too often things get out of hand and someone gets hurt.”
