Abandoned theatre in Uptown Greenville to undergo extensive renovations

GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) – An historic building in Uptown Greenville will soon bring new entertainment to the city.

A developer plans to invest a million dollars to renovate the Uptown Theatre on 5th street.

White’s Theatre opened in 1914, but was abandoned in the late 90’s and now has major issues. Crews will face the deteriorating walls and roof, and removing lead paint and asbestos, among other issues.

After extensive renovations, the Uptown Theatre will become a live music and entertainment venue.

“We’re really excited about what this adds not just for people in Greenville but for people across Eastern North Carolina. Something that you have to go to Durham to see, now you can come to Greenville and get great entertainment right in our backyard,” said Greenville Mayor Allen Thomas.

City Council will vote Thursday night whether to approval the final agreement with the developer. Once approved, construction will begin immediately.

The goal is to open the renovated theatre in 2017.
