RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) – One of North Carolina state government’s most powerful leaders has endorsed Ted Cruz for president on the eve of the state’s primary.

Senate leader Phil Berger announced his endorsement Monday, saying Cruz is the only GOP candidate with a “realistic chance” of winning the nomination who can beat the Democratic nominee in November.

Berger had positive things to say about Donald Trump, praising him for putting the spotlight on issues worthy of more discussion and debate and for challenging political correctness. But Berger says polling shows Trump losing by large margins in November.

Berger called Cruz a “principled outsider with a proven track record on fiscal and social issues that conservatives can count on.”
