STANTONSBURG, N.C. (WNCT)- A mother and her 9-month-old baby died in a traffic accident on Tuesday on NC 58, according to Highway Patrol.

Troopers told WNCT that a female driver, 27 of Walstonburg, was traveling southbound on the highway, near the Greene and Wilson County line, when she crossed the center line and collided with a pickup truck.

The truck had four passengers from La Grange. Troopers said the mother and baby in the back of the truck died on scene. The mother was not wearing a seat belt and the baby was not in a child seat at the time of the accident.

Investigators identified the victims as Alibethe Santiago and her daughter, Abigail San Juan.

Troopers say the two other truck passengers were men and went to Vidant Medical Center with serious injuries. The driver had leg and pelvic injuries. The other passenger had possible internal injuries.

Troopers say the female driver of the van had fractures to her lower leg and also went to Vidant Medical Center.

East Care helicopter service responded to the accident.

Troopers are not releasing names at this time but say charges are pending for the van driver. They say she’ll likely face a Traveling Left of Center charge and a Misdemeanor Death by Motor Vehicle charge.

The investigation is on-going.
