Sheriff: Contraband found near Tyrrell Prison Work Farm

COLUMBIA, N.C. (WNCT) – Deputies are investigating after two suspicious bags were located on New Road near the Tyrrell Prison Work Farm.

On Tuesday, a citizen reported the find to Tyrrell County Sheriff Darryl Liverman.

When deputies responded to the reported location, they found gray duct tape with plastic inside it containing  loose tobacco and a pack of Marlboro cigarettes. Members of the Sheriff’s Office think the tobacco was going to be smuggled into the prison for sale and use by inmates. That’s a violation of the North Carolina law.

Prison officials were notified about the contraband find. It’s the second time in recent months that tobacco was found near the prison.
