Numerous sewer lines collapse in Jacksonville after recent heavy rains

JACKSONVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) – In Onslow County, a sewer line collapse is causing trouble for city officials and folks in the community.

The collapsed sewer line is located on Onsville Drive and it’s just one of several collapses caused by recent heavy rains.

The rain allowed ground beneath the pipes to soften and shift, and water crushed the pipes.

City officials say it’s not uncommon during this time of the year.

“It’ll be an ongoing project and process but as we find them we will try to take care of them,” said Pete Devar, the City of Jacksonville Utilities Service Superintendent. “We will probably expect to see two or three more within the next month or so.”

Devar says they check and repair other areas which may have the same problem by sending crews to monitor the pipes.

They also have an underground video surveillance program allowing them to keep an eye on the pipes.
