National Weather Service confirms tornadoes in Duplin Co.

KENANSVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) – The National Weather Service spent the day accessing damage like this mobile home behind me, which lost its roof yesterday.

“My God, my house is gone,” said Thermon Jones. That was his first reaction when he saw his roof blown off his mobile home. “I saw the poles down and I didn’t think nothing else happened until I got closer, I could see the top across the field rolling.”

Jones and his wife weren’t home at the time. The couple calls it a blessing.

“I could have been dead if a piece of that cement of floor came down and could have hit me in the throat or neck,” Jones said.

The National Weather Service survey team from Newport traveled to Duplin, Lenoir and Pitt counties to evaluate the damage from Wednesday’s storm.

Richard Bandy said, “Preliminary, we are going to rank that a brief tornado of an EF1. It wasn’t on the ground long and it lifted up and moved farther to the northeast.”

The team uses a GPS camera to later plot if the storm was on a path. Richard Bandy says an EF0 tornado may have touched down in Warsaw.

“We look at the radar and determine,  did we see rotation on the radar and does it line up, and we make the determination if it was a tornado or not,” explained Bandy.

The crew will spend the rest of Thursday and Friday looking more in depth at the photos they took and plugging them in their archive system. The National Weather Service late Thursday confirmed that two tornadoes touched down in Duplin County on Wednesday. Click here for more.

As for the Jones couple, they’ll stay with family until they get a new mobile home.
