BELVOIR, N.C. (WCNT) — N.C. Highway Patrol says a Pitt County Attorney running for a District Court Judge position died in single-car accident Saturday afternoon. Earl T. Brown was driving on NC-33 West around 1:45 p.m. when his car hit a concrete bridge rail. Troopers say Brown died at the scene. Highway Patrol is now investigating to determine the cause of the crash.

Brown’s campaign page posted the following statement: “At this time please respect my family and our wishes of holding your calls and texts- just send up prayers.”

Candidate Wendy Hazelton shared a statement on her Facebook campaign’s page: “I am truly saddened by the loss of Attorney Earl Brown. I saw him this morning at an event. Our community lost a legend today and his family lost a hero. I send my sincere condolences to his family.”

Brown’s name will still be listed on the ballot for Pitt County under NC District Court Judge District 3A.
