SNOW HILL, N.C. (WNCT) — A gym that used to be a hub in Greene County in now unusable.
“The gym as it stands now is such a blight for the community and such an eye sore that we feel strongly that it needs to be taken care of,” says Snow Hill Town Manager Dana Hill.
Town leaders have asked Greene County to donate the building and land.
“The town board has committed to refreshing the property whether that be refreshing the gym and opening it back up for public use or demolishing it and installing another recreational activity,” says Hill.
The new area could potentially house a splash park. Greene County Parks and Recreation has scrambled to find substitute locations for programs previously housed at the facility. There is a $2.1 million plan in the works, but finding funding is hard to come by.
“We were just informed on Monday that we were not approved for that grant which grant cycles are very competitive so we knew that was a possibility,” says Greene County Parks and Recreation Director Mike Anderson.
The county is still searching for a solution but the location for the proposed building is ready to go. The new facility would be built on six acres of land at the existing recreation complex owned by the county. Organizers say this center is badly needed.
“Our kids need it, our community needs it, our county needs it,” says Anderson. “We’re trying to provide something for over 21,000 people. It’s something that Greene County hasn’t had and Greene County needs.”
Snow Hill and Greene County officials agree something needs to be done and if the government organizations come to terms, there could be two new areas for the kids to enjoy.
