Home energy audit could save you big time on your utility bill

GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) – If you had sticker shock when you opened up your latest energy bill, you might not be alone. Heating and cooling can add up to as much as 50% of your bill. That’s why it’s important to make sure your heating and cooling system isn’t working against you.

Greenville Utilities is one of several utility companies in the East that offers in-home energy audits free of charge to their customers.

Jonathan Sergeant, an energy services officer with Greenville Utilities, explained the process, ”When you can come out and meet kind of one on one. We’re gonna bring your utility history with us when we come, and be able to sit down at the table with you and kind of discuss some trends that we’re seeing.”

Since every home is different, looking at your usage and identifying problems specific to your home could save you a lot of money in the long run. Sergeant says there are some common problems that can really add up.

”We see a lot of excess water usage through their bill cycle due to flappers,” said Sergeant. “They can hang up, causing that toilet to run continuously after a flush.”

Sergeant offers some other easy steps to save energy. He recommends setting your water heater to 120 degrees. Also, you should always wash your clothes in cold water and use the auto dry setting on your dryer. If you have a heat pump system, set your thermostat and forget it. Adjusting the thermostat even just 2 degrees can cost up to 3 times as much as leaving it alone. All other heating systems, including gas, should be turned down when you’re not home to save energy.

Some additional tips:

Change air filter every 30 days

Set the fan on your thermostat to auto

With heat pump system, each degree you go above 68 equals a 5% increase in cost

Greenville Utilities is only able to provide energy audits for their customers. Check with your utility company to see if they provide a similar service.
