JACKSONVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) – There’s a change in the court calendar in the case of an Onslow County man who may face the death penalty for the murder of his girlfriend and five-month-old son.
A Rule 24 hearing was scheduled for Thursday afternoon for Sebastian Mendez, which essentially is to determine if the state will seek the death penalty. That hearing has now been postponed until Monday.
Back in July, authorities found Mendez’s girlfriend Shaung Liu dead in a car and his five-month-old son Archer dead in a suitcase.
9 On Your Side spoke with neighbors when Mendez was arrested and charged and they couldn’t believe their neighbor could do such a thing to his own son.
“It’s real sad because it’s an innocent child and they have nothing to do with anything and that whole thing could of been avoided but he took a bad route,” said Rayquane Forte, neighbor.
Things also took a bigger turn in December when Mendez was also charged for allegedly trying to pay “Onslow County inmates” to murder a witness.
Since then, Mendez has been in Central Prison due to safety concerns.
