Deputies investigating inmate death at Maury Correctional

MAURY, N.C. (WNCT) – Deputies in Greene County are investigating the death of an inmate at Maury Correctional Institution.

72-year-old Bernard Sandford was found unresponsive in his cell after an apparent suicide. Medical staff attempted to revive him but were unsuccessful. He was pronounced dead just after 4 a.m.

Sanford was serving four consecutive life sentences plus additional years for convictions of murder, arson, rape, assault with a deadly weapon and numerous counts of sex offenses. He was convicted in 2006.
