KINSTON, N.C. (WNCT) – Police in Kinston said they’re investigating another fatal shooting
It happened Monday night around 10:43 p.m.
Officers responding to a shots fired call on the 800 block of Dixon Street in Kinston stopped a vehicle and found Deonta Malik Dudley in the rear seat with a gunshot wound. Officers emptied the vehicle of all passengers and called EMS.
Dudley was taken to Vidant Medical Center in Greenville, where he later died of his injuries during surgery.
The incident is still under investigation, but Interim Kinston Public Safety Director Greg Thompson said the latest shooting and another one Monday morning are related to gang activity.
Members of Kinston’s Police Community Action Team were out knocking on people’s doors asking for information Tuesday afternoon.
Chief Thompson said it’s all hands on deck for the department as they will step up patrols in the area.
Meanwhile, family and friends of Dudley, who was found shot on Dixon Street Monday night, are remembering him as an aspiring rapper who was funny, competitive, and sensitive.
“I play his songs, memories just flow and flow,” said Jaron Baylor, Dudley’s friend. “I know I’m not going to be able to see him again, wake him up in the morning again. It just hurts. I remember him by his songs; by the songs we made.”
Chief Thompson said neighbors have been helping his officers with the investigation.
