Rain stopping DOT from pre-treating roads ahead of potential snow

GREENVILLE, NC (WNCT)- NC DOT workers are on standby until the next storm hits.

Workers say they were able to pre-treat Friday’s ice, but rain along with Saturday’s potential snow brings some challenges. Workers say they’ve treated all the ice and if they didn’t get to it the rain is going to wash it away, and now it’s just time to play the waiting game.

Maintenance engineer Jeremy Stroud said, “There’s just nothing we can really do right now but wait for the precipitation to change over to snow.”

Stroud says the rain is making it hard for crews to pre-treat any snow that’s on its way.

“Every storm is a little different, with this one again it came in with ice this morning we had pre-treated yesterday,” Stroud said.  “After the ice even we’re experiencing the rain right now so all that brine that we put out yesterday is gone or it’s real diluted.”

Stroud says his crews will have to be reactive rather than pro-active. He says all crews are on call, but because the rain will wash any pre-treatment away, all their work is going to be done after the snow falls.

Stroud encourages people to stay off the roads, especially if they see the yellow DOT trucks. He says it’s easier for them to do their job when the roads are clear.
