ECU students participate in 20th annual Polar Bear Plunge

GREENVILLE, NC (WNCT)- Students at ECU are participating in the university’s annual Polar Bear Plunge.

The tradition allows students to jump into an outdoor pool filled with freezing cold water. The Polar Bear Plunge is something ECU’s Recreation Center has put on for 20 years. Organizers say the plunge started out as a small event, and every year it keeps getting bigger and bigger. Student affairs director Christopher Stansbury says the university is expecting over a thousand students to participate.

Christopher Stansbury said, “I think they like being able to start their spring semester with a tradition. They get to jump into the pool, they get to have a little food, and of course they get a t-shirt, and everyone loves a t-shirt. It’s a tradition that started small, but has really grown great with the students.”

Students say it brings the community together. Faculty and staff are also invited to participate in the plunge.
