Kinston homeless shelter operating under emergency hours due to weather

KINSTON, NC (WNCT) – The recent cold weather has the Friends of the Homeless Shelter open 24/7.

The normal operating hours are from 6 p.m. to 8 a.m., but its policy is to stay open when the weather drops below 32 degrees.

“We’re extending out hours to our emergency phase and we’ll be open 24/7 for the next several days, probably including the weekend, because even though it won’t be as cold, it will be wet,” said Jasper Newborn, manager, Friends of the Homeless Shelter.

The shelter averages 15-20 guests each night. On Sunday night, the count was 17, but the numbers are expected to rise when the temperatures drop.

Various activities and snacks are offered to the guests when the shelter is open for extended hours.
