Corner Store Initiative brings healthy food options to Kinston

KINSTON, NC (WNCT) – An organization in Kinston keeps working to bring healthier food to the community.

Little Bud Thorb’s Economic Development Association is adding options to corner stores in what’s considered a food desert, with limited places to get healthy food.

Linwood Thorbs is adding healthy food aisles to convenience stores through the Corner Store Initiative.

“Transportation is a problem. And even the stores that are out there, they don’t carry fruits and vegetables.”

Thorbs is partnering with UNC to install these healthy food aisles in popular convenience stores located near people’s homes.

“What they allowed us to do was come in and put produce in their stores; bananas, grapes, peppers.”

It started in April 2015 with just one store. Now it’s expanded to two, and it’s not stopping there.

People often walk to these stores and do not have ways to travel to places like the Kinston Farmer’s Market, which has plenty of produce.

“A lot of people don’t have transportation to go down there because we’re up the hill and down the hill is where the farmer’s market is,” said Kinston resident, Timothy Garner. “So if a person is not growing it in their yard, they have to go somewhere else to get food that’s grown from the earth.”

Thorbs hopes to expand these initiatives and bring more healthy food to people in Kinston.
