PLYMOUTH, N.C. (WNCT) – The Washington County Sheriff’s Office tells 9 On Your Side that Heather Burton has been caught in Elizabeth City.
The Elizabeth City Police and Pasoquotank County Sheriff’s Office found Burton Thursday afternoon. The 29-year-old escaped from the Washington County Hospital Wednesday.

A Washington County inmate is on the run and she may have made her way to another state.
Sheriff Johnny Barnes says that 29-year-old Heather Burton was injured in the county jail after falling down a flight of steps.
Detention officers took Burton to Washington County Hospital.Barnes says that doctors ordered her to get an X-ray. At that time, the detention officer left the room to avoid radiation.
There were two doors in the bathroom in the X-ray room. Barnes says Burton used the second door to escape into a different room, then left, and stole a black Chevy truck. She also later made a call from Virginia to her boyfriend’s parents house.
Burton was being held pending a court appearance for a probation violation in Pitt County. Online records show her last conviction was for larceny.
Surrounding counties are assisting in the search for Burton.
Sheriff Barnes says she is from Elizabeth City and has family in Pasquotank County. She has acquaintances in Tyrrell County.
