Craven Co. Schools asking parents to weigh in on school uniforms

NEW BERN, N.C. (WNCT) – Craven County Schools will ask parents to decide whether children should wear school uniforms.

The system will send out surveys to parents on January 26, 2016.

Several schools had individual dress codes but relaxed them following last year’s redistricting.

The school system’s director of student support services, Debbie Hodges, said parents will get to choose whether all children from kindergarten through 8th grade should wear solid color collared shirts and pants.

“Our decision will be completely based on the parents input,” Hodges said. “We are looking at a 60 percent in favor rate in in order to even consider passing this.”

Parent Leslie Wheat is not in favor of the uniforms

“Bullying in school is going to happen either way,” Wheat said. “You’re going to have kids with nice clothes and you’re going to have kids that have as nice of clothes so it’s going to be the same way regardless of the decision.”
