Blounts Creek residents appeal ruling allowing quarry construction

BLOUNTS CREEK, N.C. (WNCT) – Save Blounts Creek lawyers filed an appeal last week in hopes of keeping aggregates company Martin Marietta from building a quarry in the creek.

It was filed in Carteret County Superior Court in hopes of overturning a lower court’s November decision.

PREVIOUS STORY (12/1/2016):

A North Carolina administrative court made a decision Wednesday regarding Blounts Creek and ruled in favor of aggregates company Martin Marietta, which wants to build a quarry there.

Last year, Blounts Creek residents filed a suit to stop the process through Beaufort County Superior Court.

The panel felt there were enough questions to send it down to the administrative court.

Blounts Creek residents said Wednesday’s ruling was a blow, but they are not giving up. They are going to appeal again through the county’s superior court.

“We feel pretty confident,” said Heather Deck, a community member who is fighting against the quarry. “When they go through the information, look at the law…we’ll have a good outcome.”
