GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) – The Greenville Police Department will have extra patrols for New Year’s Eve.
Sgt. Joe Friday said the traffic safety unit will be out making sure people don’t drink and drive.
He said people should know before they go out who will be their designated driver or where they’ll stay for the night.
“Even if you’re not drinking, you really need to be careful and practice good defensive driving techniques,” Sgt. Friday said. “You certainly don’t want to be hit by someone who’s texting and driving or who’s driving while distracted.”
There’s also rider-sharing services like Dryver which caters to East Carolina University students.
If someone gets charged with a DWI, he’ll be required to appear in court and enter a plea, and if he get convicted for the first time, he’ll lose their license for a year and pay up to $4,000 in fines.
Sgt. Friday also encouraged people to download the Companion app which allows family or friends to “virtually” walk home with a person.
