Martin Co retired K9 officer passes away

WILLIAMSTON, N.C. (WNCT) – The Martin County Sheriff’s Office reported on Tuesday that a K9 officer passed away.

Deputies say Rex was a 12 year old Belgian Malinois born in Holland. He joined the Sheriff’s Office in July of 2008.

Rex worked with deputies and performed in demonstrations. He also is credited with multiple drug busts and the tracking down of suspects.

He was retired from the office in February 2015.

According to a release, deputies had this response:

As with all law enforcement canines, Rex was 100% loyal and dedicated to his handler, Sgt. Chris Wilkerson; spending many shifts together patrolling and serving the citizens of Martin County.  Rex will be greatly missed.
