GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) – JCPenney’s in Greenville opened at six Saturday morning for shoppers who are looking for post-Christmas deals.
“We are Christmas shopping for us now,” says Lynn Cox.
While many people use the day after Christmas for returns, others spend December 26th scoring deals.
Cox said, “I think it’s only because of the coupon. I don’t think they’re better than before, but the coupons help.”
She’s talking about a coupon with up to 50 dollars off a purchase at JCPenney’s. It’s valid only on Saturday.
“I love the coupon anytime but I think the biggest thing is it’s more peaceful today than Christmas Eve and I would rather shop in a little bit more peaceful atmosphere. I was surprised they’re not as many people out today,” Cox said.
The National Retail Federation says nearly 40 percent of consumers returned a holiday gift last season.
Brittany Dawson said, “There were Christmas gifts, some that weren’t the right size, some that I didn’t like them as much, so we are just going to switch them out and get what I want.”
JCPenney’s says they give refunds to shoppers holding receipts while those without a receipt can expect store credit. The most returned items include clothes and flashy jewelry. Returns and exchanges have been increasing. Last year, $284 billion worth of merchandise was returned. That’s up 6.2 percent from $267 billion in 2013. Many people tell me that’s why they stick with gift cards or buy their own clothes like Lynn Cox.
“I’m planning on going by Stein Mart and I’m going to finish the rest of the stores in here” Cox said.
The manager of JCPenney’s says he expects the same amount of people to walk through the doors Saturday as there was on Christmas Eve.
