No signs of smoke in Farmville silo fire

FARMVILLE, NC (WNCT)- The Farmville Volunteer Fire Department says that the silo fire at the Natural Blend plant has finally diminished.

Assistant Fire Chief Tommy Brady says it had been burning for a total of 23 days. Fire crews cleared the scene Saturday after not seeing smoke the last two days.

Fire crews will continue to monitor the silo, but not as frequently.

Volunteer firefighters were called to a silo fire in Farmville on black Friday, and have continued to monitor the structure since.

“Were limited on getting water in there and it’s just a waiting game to see if we flood it enough to kill the smoldering,” said Assistant Fire Chief Tommy Brady.

Fire crews say they’ve used over 30 million gallons of water. 75 percent of that water was coming from the companies own supply.

On Thursday, crews changed their game plan and switched the water from hitting the outside of the silo to drilling a hole in the tank.

“We are able to flow water on top of the product itself at least to pretty much drown it,” Brady explained.

The Natural Blend plant owner says the burning silo was holding around a half million pellets when it caught fire. That money loss is over $575,000 dollars.

Employees were given other jobs to stay employed. We’re told once the silo is deemed safe; workers will go back to their daily jobs. As for the fire crews, they’re exhausted.

“The ones that do have full time jobs had to work around schedules whenever they are available to come out here as well as family ties and stuff they have planned . It’s been a process,” Brady said.

The plant owner says it’s up to the building inspectors and structural engineers on whether the silo will stay or be demolished.
