Greenville man’s death at Carteret Co. Jail under investigation

BEAUFORT, N.C. (WNCT) – The death of a Greenville man at the Carteret County Jail is under investigation by the State Bureau of Investigation.

Deputies say 32-year-old Patrick Joseph O’Malley died around 3:45 a.m. Tuesday. His death appears to be “medically related” as there are no signs of injury. The Beaufort Rescue Squad responded to the scene and O’Malley was later transported to Carteret Health Care.

O’Malley was in the Carteret County Jail after being charged with “inhaling toxic vapors”, larceny and possession of stolen property, failing to report an accident, and driving while license revoked. He was brought in on December 8th and was being held on a $10,000 bond. O’Malley’s court date was scheduled for January 13th.01/13/2016.

An autopsy will be performed later this week in Jacksonville to determine O’Malley’s cause of death.

As this is an active and ongoing investigation by the SBI no further information will be released at this time.
