Kinston falls behind early, loses 57-21 in 2A State Championship

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP ) Darquez Lee threw for five touchdowns while Xavier Brooks ran for a pair to help Shelby beat Kinston 57-21 in Saturday’s Class 2-A North Carolina High School Athletic Association championship game.

Lee was named the game’s most valuable player for the Golden Lions (15-1), who led 36-0 in the second quarter in a runaway victory for their third straight state title. Lee threw for 256 of Shelby’s 470 total yards, with three of his TD throws coming in the opening quarter — including an 80-yarder to Jayden Borders less than 4 minutes in.

Brooks scored on runs of 24 and 8 yards, while Damien Key added a fourth-quarter interception return for a score to seal the win.

Thomas Vermillion threw for 209 yards and two touchdowns with three interceptions for the Vikings (15-1), who were in their second state final.
