GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) – It didn’t take long for Ruffin McNeill to be scooped up.
Eight days after he was relieved of his duties at East Carolina, McNeill was hired at the University of Virginia as an assistant head coach.
The 57-year-old will coach inside linebackers under new head coach Bronco Mendenhall.
The University of Virginia announced the decision Saturday afternoon.
McNeill will join a very familiar coaching staff in Charlottesville.
McNeill, at ECU, and Mendenhall, formerly at BYU, often convened at each other’s campus to exchange coaching ideas.
In October, prior to ECU’s game against Mendenhall and the Cougars, McNeill addressed this unique relationship.
“Bronco and our staffs exchange ideas defensively. That probably started about five years ago. Robert Anae is one of my best friends. He’s their offensive coordinator. You’ll see similar, mirror images defensively, and even offensively.”
Mendenhall was named the new head coach earlier this month. And Anae has been appointed the Cavaliers offensive coordinator.
Brigham Young, under Mendenhall, beat ECU in October 45-38.
McNeill was relieved of his duties at East Carolina on December 4. He served six years in Greenville with an overall record of 42-34.
