National Flu Vaccine Week; doctors encourage flu shots

GREENVILLE, NC (WNCT)- This week is national flu vaccine week. Doctors in our area want you to know how important the flu shot is.

Doctors recommend everyone get the flu shot, but some people are at a higher risk of getting the virus. People who are pregnant or plan to get pregnant during the flu season, and Anyone with a weakened immune system are strongly encouraged to get a flu shot. Peak flu season is not here yet, but doctors say it takes time for the vaccine to work.

Dr. Gwendolyn Knuckles said, “Typically we want to be actively vaccinating people by October so the immunity is present. Once you get your vaccine you’re not immediately immune and the season usually falls into the beginning part of the New Year.”

North Carolina has not had a single flu related death since October 10th.
