GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) – On Saturday, thousands of people walked through the Greenville Convention Center to purchase their first firearm.
Many say they’re opting to protect themselves.
“To feel safer,” said Ann Francisco. “I have two boys and, if anything was to happen, I would want to make sure that I was protected and my family was protected.
Francisco says it’s time to get a gun. She’s a Pitt County resident and Sheriff Neil Elks approved Francisco’s permits to purchase firearms on Tuesday.
“I read over and answered a few questions about whether or not I’ve done anything illegal or if I have been convicted of a felony,” Francisco explained.
The two permits allow Francisco to buy two guns, but she didn’t get her concealed carry license.
A firearm isn’t your only option for protection.
“Get pepper spray, get a taser, get mace, just get something,” Jody West said.
Many people agree it’s important to be ready to protect yourself. Others say guns cause more problems.
As for Francisco, she’s planning on taking the concealed weapons class to further educate herself on firearms.
“I think it’s very important to educate yourself and know exactly what is going on with the gun,” said Francisco, who added, “Not to buy one and not know how to use it.”
