Driver of SUV charged in crash that killed OBX girl

Bri Blumenthal

KILL DEVIL HILLS, Va. (WAVY) — The driver of the SUV that struck a 12-year-old Outer Banks girl in November has been charged by police.

Doris Younts is now facing a misdemeanor charge of death by motor vehicle and failing to stop at a red light for hitting Bri Blumenthal on Nov. 23 at the intersection of Veterans Drive and Oceans Bay Boulevard.

Eyewitnesses told police that Blumenthal was crossing the intersection on her bicycle at the same time that the SUV driven by Younts ran through a red light at that intersection.

Blumenthal was flown from the scene to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, and succumbed to those injuries a few days later.

Younts is scheduled to make her first appearance in court on Feb. 16.
