Community sets up donations for 12-year-old hit while crossing the street

KILL DEVIL HILLS, N.C. (WNCT) – People in the Outer Banks are coming together to help support a family after a 12-year-old girl suffers serious injuries after getting hit by car.

The Kill Devil Hills Police Departments says the accident happened on Nov. 23rd at the intersection of Veteran’s Drive and Ocean Bay Boulevard.

Police say a 12-year-old girl, on a bike, was crossing Veteran’s Drive in the crosswalk, when a car ran a steady red light and hit her. The girl was airlifted to Norfolk Sentara Hospital with life-threatening injuries.

To help the girl’s family during this time, people in the community set up an account at Southern Bank to help with medical expenses. Donations are set up under the name “Friends of Scotty Blumenthal.”

Police say charges are pending against the driver. Officers say distracting driving, speed, and alcohol do not appear to be a factor in the accident.
