GREENVILLE, NC (WNCT)- A surgical procedure could cure patients with type two diabetes.
Doctors at ECU’s Brody school of Medicine say gastric bypass is a treatment option for the disease. The surgery along with lifestyle changes has an 80 percent success rate. Doctors recommend it for diabetic patients with a b-m-i of 35 or higher.
Gregory Bethea had the surgery two years ago and lost 118 pounds because of it. Bethea walks 6 miles a day, and is happy to say his diabetes is in remission.
“My activity level is just increased dramatically and I’ve been able to just operate much more efficiently being the things that I do on a daily basis,” Bethea said.
