128 grams of crack cocaine seized from Halifax speeding violator

ROANOKE RAPIDS, NC (WNCT)- The Halifax County Sheriff’s Office arrested a man Friday night after finding crack cocaine, marijuana, and handguns in his car.

The Halifax County Sheriff’s Office was in the Highway 158 area in Roanoke Rapids. Around 8:30pm, Corporal Steven Casey stopped a vehicle for a speeding violation on Huckleberry Bottom Road near Highway 158.

Casey approached the vehicle and identified the driver of the vehicle to be Derek Lee Whitaker, 34, of Roanoke Rapids by his NC Driver’s License.

During the encounter with Whitaker, Whitaker admitted he had a handgun inside the vehicle. During Casey’s investigation approximately 128 grams of crack cocaine, marijuana, a handgun and rifle were seized.

The street value of the cocaine is approximately $7,700.

Casey arrested and charged Whitaker with speeding, trafficking cocaine, possession with the intent to sale/deliver cocaine, felony possession of cocaine, maintaining a vehicle/dwelling for a controlled substance, carrying a concealed weapon and possessing marijuana up to one-half ounce.

Whitaker was given a $50,000 secured bond with a December 2, 2015 court date and was confined to the Halifax County Detention Center.
